Our Zagorje Special program strives to show that Tabor Film Festival is not the only link between the Croatian Zagorje and cinema. By finding films of differing genres that have a certain connection to Zagorje, whether they revolve around Zagorje in theme, via inspiration or the region plays a role in the authors’ background, the program is set on exploring the cinematic potential of Zagorje.
The film we present to you this year, “Home of the Resistance” directed by Ivan Ramljak, had its world premiere at the prestigious Cinéma du reel festival in Paris. Shot on location in Kumrovec, about ten kilometres from Veliki Tabor Castle, the film centers around an architectural achievement designed by architects Berislav Šerbetić and Ivan Filipčić, which continues to impress to this very day. It was once known as the Memorial Home for WWII Resistance Fighters and Youth of Yugoslavia.
Ivan Ramljak is a film critic, film director and independent curator. He currently curates a short film program called Kratki utorak (“Short Tuesday”) at Tuškanac Cinema in Zagreb and is the Artistic Director of Tabor Film Festival.
In 1974, the communist authorities built the so-called ‘Memorial Home for WWII Resistance Fighters and Youth of Yugoslavia’ in Kumrovec, the hometown of legendary president Tito. In 1991, when Yugoslavia collapsed, 11 years after Tito’s death, the Memorial Home was closed, as it is now. Still, some fighters remain…
